The Magic Words That Help Kids Grow: "I'll Give It a Try!"

Some of the most powerful words a child can learn aren't the longest or the fanciest.

They're simply:

"I'll give it a try."

Those five words open the door to learning, confidence, and growth.

Many children hesitate when something feels difficult or unfamiliar. They might say, "I can't do it," or "It's too hard." Instead of focusing on the result, help your child focus on taking the first step.

Trying doesn't guarantee immediate success—but it does guarantee learning.

When children begin replacing "I can't" with "I'll give it a try," they start seeing challenges as opportunities instead of obstacles. Over time, that simple shift in thinking helps them become more resilient, independent, and willing to take healthy risks.

Summer offers countless opportunities to practice this mindset. Whether it's learning a new skill, reading a different kind of book, introducing themselves to another child, or helping with a household responsibility, every new experience strengthens their confidence.

Best Life Action

This week, listen for moments when your child says, "I can't."

Instead of giving the answer, gently ask:

"What if we changed those words to, 'I'll give it a try'?"

You may be surprised how often that one sentence changes their attitude.

Conversation Starters

  • What is one thing you've been afraid to try?

  • How did you feel after trying something new?

  • What brave challenge would you like to take on next?

Try This at Home

Choose one day this week to be your family's "Try It Day." Everyone—including parents—tries something new. Share your experiences at dinner and celebrate each person's willingness to step outside their comfort zone.

Sometimes the bravest thing we can say is, "I'll give it a try." And often, that's where confidence begins.
