The Gift We Don't Always Realize We're Giving

There are moments at school that stay with me long after the day is over.

Not because they're dramatic, but because they remind me how children grow.

A little while ago, I watched a child struggle to put on a backpack. It would've been easy for an adult to step in and do it for them. Instead, they were encouraged to keep trying.

It took a little longer than if someone had done it for them, but when they finally got it, the smile on their face said it all.

It wasn't really about the backpack.

It was about realizing, "I did it."

As parents, we naturally want to make life easier for our children. We remind them, rescue them, and sometimes even do things for them because it's quicker. We've all been there.

But I've learned something from working with children over the years.

They are often capable of more than we think.

Sometimes they just need a little more time.

The confidence we want our children to have doesn't magically appear one day. It grows through ordinary moments—tying a shoe, cleaning up a mess, introducing themselves to someone new, or figuring out how to solve a small problem without someone rushing in to fix it.

Those little victories add up.

As summer comes to an end and children begin getting ready for a new school year, look for opportunities to step back just a little.

Let them pack their backpack.

Let them choose their clothes.

Let them make a mistake and learn from it.

It may take an extra few minutes today, but you're building something much bigger than independence.

You're helping your child believe, "I can handle this."

And that's a lesson they'll carry long after childhood.
